McKINNEY, Texas (Oct. 4, 2007) - Beginning in October, the City of McKinney is hoping a new automated red light camera enforcement program will cause area motorists to take traffic signals a little more seriously.More than 3 million intersection crashes occur across the country annually, resulting in over 9,000 fatalities. Each year more than 50% of all reported crashes and 22% of all injury crashes occur in an intersection.Through a contract with Redflex Traffic Systems Inc., a traffic signal camera is now active at the intersection of Stonebridge and Virginia."This camera is an important tool in protecting drivers passing through this busy intersection," said Assistant Police Chief Rex Redden. "This site was selected due to the large number of drivers running the red light and the high number of accidents that occur at this intersection annually. We believe that drivers will use more caution, and lives will be saved, now that we are able to monitor this location 24/7."The traffic camera will produce high-resolution, full-color digital images from several vantage points. A driver receiving a citation will receive full-color digital images imprinted with the date, time, location, lane of travel, vehicle speed and posted speed for each violation. Prior to issuance, citations will be authorized by the McKinney Police Department.
